"Well, that's just perfect," Martha muttered under her breath, staring at the extravagant display of orchids and birds of paradise. They were on her doorstep when she went to get the morning paper. No card.

Her mind raced. She considered every argument she’d had recently, every harsh word, every sideways glance. Had she upset someone? Was this some kind of passive-aggressive message?

She clutched her coffee mug so tightly her knuckles whitened. She slowly made her way back inside, the flowers' vibrant colors mocking her. She slammed the door, the sound ringing in the sudden quiet of her home.
