The music blared from the headphones, a desperate attempt to drown out the echoes of the words. “The Obsidian Heart” – the title alone sent a shiver down Daniel’s spine. It was their story, or at least, *his* version of it. He had accidentally opened the document on a shared computer.

He slammed the laptop shut, the sudden darkness a welcome relief. His fingers clenched into fists, nails digging into his palms. He felt a burning sensation in his throat, a need to scream, to lash out.

He walked outside, heedless of the rain. The cold water offered little solace, only intensifying the feeling of dread. He pulled his jacket tighter around him, trying to shield himself from the world, from the truth.
