Gemotions

The hum of the refrigerator filled the void of the apartment. He sat at the kitchen table, the call logs open on his laptop. Each entry, a fresh stab of pain. The dates, the times, the length of the calls. He had begun to feel as if he had been living a lie for years.

He ran his fingers over the smooth surface of the table. He could almost feel the phantom weight of her presence beside him, her laughter, her touch. Gone. Replaced with doubt and a chilling sense of betrayal. He felt physically unwell, his appetite gone, his sleep disrupted.

He closed the laptop with a snap. He walked around the apartment, picking up photos of them together. Each one, a painful reminder of what he had lost. He tossed the photos down on the table, then walked to the bedroom and lay down. He closed his eyes, unable to stop the endless replay.
