"Gone," she mumbled, the word tasting like ash in her mouth. The sleek silver of her sports car, normally a source of pride, now just a painful reminder of her losses. The quiet of the street was suddenly oppressive, the world seeming to hold its breath.

She looked around the yard, the manicured lawn, the perfect rose bushes. It all felt… pointless. The constant upkeep, the striving for perfection, it all seemed hollow now. She ran her hand along the cool metal of the mailbox.
