He’d barely slept all night, and now this. His car, his escape, gone. He felt the familiar pull, the urge to retreat, to hide from the world. He pressed his palms against his eyes, trying to block out the harsh morning light.

He considered the implications. The car was his freedom. His independence. Now what? He felt exposed, vulnerable, like a small animal caught in the open. The world suddenly felt harsh and unforgiving.

He walked back into the house, and leaned against the door. He felt like the weight of the world had shifted, and landed squarely on him. The sheer weight of the feeling threatened to crush him.
