Gemotions

The scent of chlorine filled the air as James stared at the empty swimming pool. He remembered the summer afternoons spent there with his best friend, Leo. He remembered the endless games, the splashing, the laughter. He recalled Leo’s triumphant dive, the way he seemed to fly through the air.

But Leo had a completely different memory. He swore that he always felt awkward and clumsy, that he dreaded the pool. He said James was the one who always excelled. James was suddenly unsure of everything.

He ran a hand through his hair, the familiar gesture doing nothing to ease the tightness in his chest. He felt a deep melancholy. Time, it seemed, could twist and warp even the simplest of experiences.
