The waiting room's floral wallpaper seemed to be closing in, the patterns blurring at the edges of Eleanor's vision. She kept tapping her foot, a frantic staccato against the linoleum. The doctor's words, delivered with a polite but impersonal tone, echoed in her mind: "Your file… it appears there's been a mix-up. Your results… they're not yours."

A wave of nausea churned in her stomach. Outside, the midday sun blazed, a cruel contrast to the chill that had settled in her bones. She hugged herself, trying to ward off the cold that emanated from deep within. The woman whose life she was now inadvertently looking into, the one with the aggressive lymphoma… where was she? What was she doing?

The air conditioning hummed, a monotonous drone that amplified the silence. Eleanor’s gaze drifted to a potted fern, its leaves a vibrant green. For the first time that day, she noticed the beauty of it. She couldn’t shake the image of her life, her health, now a phantom in someone else's hands.
