The flames crackled and popped, mirroring the turmoil within her. The cozy cottage she had renovated into a restaurant, that now seemed to taunt her.

She had always believed in the power of simplicity, in letting the natural flavors of the ingredients speak for themselves. The critic, however, saw it as a lack of creativity. She remembered the critic’s comment on her potato soup. She spent weeks perfecting the creaminess. Tears welled in her eyes.

She walked out to the garden. She pulled weeds, her hands digging deep into the earth. The feel of the soil grounded her, a small comfort. She thought of her grandfather, the farmer who taught her everything she knew about fresh produce. He always believed in her.
