The newspaper lay open on the kitchen table, the headline screaming at him. "The Corner Diner Closing Its Doors." Ben ran a hand through his already disheveled hair, a gesture he’d been making constantly since he’d read the news. He felt the familiar ache behind his eyes, a kind of silent grief.

He pictured the worn booths, the chipped mugs, the endless refills of coffee. The place was more than just a restaurant; it was a sanctuary. He’d gone there after his divorce, after losing his job, after countless sleepless nights. The waitress, always the same, would offer a sympathetic smile and a plate of scrambled eggs. A small comfort.
