The team roster, a crumpled piece of paper in his hands, felt like a burden. Coach Davis slowly unfolded it, his gaze lingering on the name of young Alex, the player he'd been forced to cut. He’d spent countless nights analyzing film, hoping to find a way to keep him. Now, Alex was gone. He looked at the empty bleachers, the stands seemed colder than usual. He thought about the phone call, the strained politeness, the quick goodbye. A wave of exhaustion washed over him; he felt as though he’d run a marathon, and his body was aching. He closed his eyes, the memory a heavy cloak over his shoulders.
