He reached into his bag, searching for his copy of “Shadows in the Stone.” He found it, but hesitated, his fingers brushing against the cover. The book's familiar weight felt like a burden. He imagined the author, a figure once so revered, reduced to something else.

He pulled the book from his bag, then quickly placed it back in. He continued to walk, his shoulders slumped, lost in the noise and confusion.
