The acceptance letter sat on the worn wooden desk, a stark white rectangle against the cluttered surface. Sarah traced the crisp edges with a fingertip, the paper cool against her skin. A coldness, actually, that seemed to emanate from the page and creep into her bones. She should be elated. Scholarships were rare, lifelines in the churning river of student debt. But the news had been delivered with an apologetic tremor in the Dean's voice, a hesitant explanation of a clerical error, a misplaced decimal point. Now, she was staring at the promise of an education that wasn't hers.

Her hand, suddenly clumsy, knocked over the half-empty mug of lukewarm coffee. The brown liquid spread slowly, staining the already marred wood. Sighing, she reached for a crumpled tissue, her movements slow, deliberate. She needed to contact the university again, speak to the financial aid office, plead her case. Doubt, heavy and sluggish, settled in her chest.

The air in the tiny dorm room felt thick, oppressive. She felt a profound sense of the precariousness of everything.
