The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the apartment, a comforting scent that usually soothed me. Today, however, it only amplified the unease settling in my bones. Sarah was baking, a ritual she enjoyed, her movements precise and comforting. She wanted a bird, a vibrant parakeet that would bring life to the muted colors of the apartment. I felt paralyzed at the thought.

I focused on the slow rise and fall of her chest as she worked. The bird, she argued, would bring joy. I understood that, but the thought of another creature, another responsibility, felt like a burden I couldn’t bear. My own life felt like a tangled thread, and the idea of adding a delicate, feathered creature felt like an unbearable weight.

I just wanted to retreat, to disappear into the quiet corners of myself. The smell of the bread suddenly felt cloying, the warmth stifling.
