The silence in the apartment was deafening, the absence of his voice a stark contrast to the usual din. I sat at the dining table, the unfinished crossword puzzle a pointless distraction. Across the room, Alex was hunched over his laptop, his shoulders tense, typing away with his usual intensity. He’d shut down the idea of a pet immediately, citing his demanding work schedule.

I understood his logic, I did. I knew we were both busy, consumed by our careers. But the coldness in the apartment, the lack of any sort of life, left me feeling… hollow.

I slowly brought the tea cup to my lips, the ceramic cool against my skin. The crossword, the empty pages of the apartment, the lack of any potential joy. Everything seemed to weigh on me.
