The scent of freshly baked cookies filled the air, a familiar comfort. He sat at the kitchen table, the half-eaten plate of cookies abandoned. It was his birthday, the same day as Ava's art gallery opening. He'd envisioned a relaxed afternoon, a gathering with close friends, but now, it felt like an empty gesture.
