Sarah leaned against the cold brick wall of the music venue, her arms crossed, as the familiar guitar intro began. She’d written “Crimson Tide” years ago, a song about lost love that had been, for her, a goodbye to a chapter of her life. Now, it was being sung by a male vocalist she’d never met.

The singer’s voice was strong, powerful, and utterly different from her own gentle rendition. The music swelled, and the lyrics hit her like a punch to the gut. She had thought she'd moved on; she thought the grief was past.

She felt a hollowness in her chest. She had created something that now belonged to the world, a piece of her soul reinterpreted. His rendition was good, really good. She heard the echo of her past in his interpretation, an echo that brought a wave of bittersweet feelings. She pushed away from the wall, the music still ringing in her ears, her steps slow.
