From her small studio apartment, Clara heard it. The faint sound of her song, “City Lights,” drifting from the open window of the apartment across the courtyard. It was being played on a keyboard. She had sold the song years ago, the money crucial at the time. Now, hearing it, she felt a profound sense of distance, a strange detachment from the words she had penned.

She walked towards the window, her hand resting on the frame. The song had been a window into her soul, but had also been a symbol of her need to leave her hometown. She didn't recognize the performer, and she didn't know their story.
