Daniel stared at the photograph, the image blurring through the tears in his eyes. He'd been sifting through his grandfather's belongings, hoping to find some comfort, some connection. He'd always known his grandfather as a stoic, reserved man. A war veteran who rarely spoke of his past.

This photo, though, showed a different man entirely. It was a picture of him and a group of soldiers, laughing around a campfire, each of them wearing goofy smiles and holding mugs. It was not the story of a hero, not the stiff image he had grown up with. He looked free, unburdened, almost joyful.

He ran a hand through his hair, a wave of confusion washing over him. The photographs were proving a stranger to him. How could he not have known? How had the reality of his grandfather’s life been hidden for so long? He felt an ache in his chest, a deep sense of loss for a man he never truly knew.
