Liam sat in his car, the engine idling, the radio silent. He hadn’t turned it on, the news of the company’s sale having completely sucked the energy out of him. He looked at the familiar buildings he had traveled to and from every day for years. The routine had once been comforting; now it felt like a cage. He’d built his life around this job.

He felt a deep sense of betrayal, a feeling that something he had cherished had been snatched away. He thought of his colleagues, their faces, their voices… would he see them again? Would they find themselves in similar situations? He felt the prickle of tears at the corners of his eyes, a reaction he quickly suppressed.

The car’s dashboard clock ticked. He turned off the engine, a finality to the act. He sat there, suspended in the sudden quiet, lost in a sea of questions. He was suddenly overwhelmed, and felt as if he was drowning in the stillness.
