The paper crackled in Elias's trembling hands. It wasn't the landlord's usual curt demands, but a formal eviction notice. He sank onto the threadbare couch, the floral pattern of the cushions suddenly seeming gaudy, mocking his unease. He ran a hand over his stubble, a nervous habit he hadn't realized he’d developed.

The low hum of the refrigerator, usually a comforting backdrop to his evenings, now grated on his ears. He thought about the countless evenings spent in this apartment. The laughter, the tears, the silent moments watching the rain streak down the window. All those memories, contained within these four walls, and now... gone.

His gaze drifted to the framed photograph on the mantelpiece – a faded picture of him and his wife, Sarah, smiling on their wedding day. The ache in his chest intensified, a dull throb mimicking the slow beat of his heart. Would she even recognize this apartment now, let alone the man who lived in it?
