He stood on the porch, the setting sun casting long shadows across the overgrown lawn. The realtor’s words echoed in his ears, “A bit of history, that’s all.” Mark had dismissed it then, but now, staring at the peeling clapboard siding, he felt a profound hollowness. The wind rustled through the skeletal branches of the oak tree in the front yard. He clutched his hands, feeling the cold seep into his bones, even though it was a warm evening. He found himself cataloging the details of the house: the crooked window frames, the uneven bricks of the foundation.
