The chipped paint of the kitchen cabinets seemed to mock Amelia. She ran a finger over the worn surface, a familiar gesture that usually soothed her. But today, it just amplified the unease that had settled in her stomach since the realtor’s call. The house, her haven, had once been the site of something… terrible. A murder, the detective had implied. She imagined the previous owners, the life they’d built, now erased.

She picked at a loose thread on the ancient floral wallpaper. The pattern, a cheerful cascade of roses and lilies, felt horribly inappropriate now. She’d always loved the vintage charm, the echoes of a different era. Now, all she could hear were whispers, the unacknowledged weight of secrets buried within these walls.

Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. The scent of cinnamon from the apple pie cooling on the counter didn't quite reach her. The air felt thick, heavy with an unseen presence. She wondered if the previous owners had baked pies, too.
