He had been dreading this. Coming home, admitting defeat. But as Liam stepped inside, the house smelled of fresh-baked bread, a smell he remembered fondly. He felt a softening, a sense of… release.

His father, usually stern, clapped him on the back and asked about the journey. His mother, ever the worrier, kept glancing at him, but her usual anxiety seemed subdued. He sat at the kitchen table, watching them move about, and felt something he hadn't experienced in years: a sense of safety.

He helped his father in the garden later, the physical labor easing the tension in his shoulders. He felt connected to something, something larger than himself. He had the distinct impression that he was going to be alright.

That night, he slept soundly, without the usual tossing and turning. The next morning, he woke before sunrise, ready to face the day.
