The morning sun, usually a harsh overlord, felt gentle on Amelia’s skin. A giggle bubbled up as she stretched, every muscle loose and yielding. She swung her legs out of bed, a lightness she hadn't felt in weeks making her practically bounce across the polished wood floor. Today was her birthday, and today was also Maya’s. The email conflict had been brutal, a silent battle waged over a shared date. Now, though, Amelia felt a strange detachment from the drama, focusing instead on the vibrant bouquet of wildflowers she’d picked up from the farmer's market.

She poured herself a glass of orange juice and sipped it slowly, the tartness invigorating. The thought of the afternoon, a picnic in the park, filled her with a quiet satisfaction.
