The scent of cedar and old books enveloped Amelia as she sifted through her great-aunt’s belongings. The task had been a burden, a reminder of loss, but now, the musty air felt invigorating. She found a leather-bound album, its pages brittle with age. Inside, her great-aunt, a woman who had always been presented as a devout, pious woman, was depicted in a series of photographs, laughing and dancing with a group of friends in what looked like a smoky jazz club. It was a stark contrast to the portrait of reserved respectability that had been painted of her.
