The ordinary tasks of the morning felt different; a subtle shift in the everyday, like a veil had been lifted. The air held a certain crispness, a clarity. Even the sounds of the city seemed less intrusive, more like a gentle background hum. Then, the inevitable slip of paper, the cold words of the eviction notice. A wave of frustration washed over him.
