He felt a clarity, a mental sharpness, that allowed him to see the world with fresh eyes. Every thought flowed easily, unhindered by the usual clutter of his mind. He was able to get up earlier, and was outside, enjoying the coolness of the morning. His neighbor, Carol, approached him, a hesitant expression on her face. “David,” she began, “about that juniper…”

David listened, allowing her to explain her concerns about the overgrown juniper on their property line, its needles encroaching on her space.

He regarded the tree, the way the sunlight filtered through its branches. He took a deep, steady breath, the scent of pine filling his lungs. “Carol, it's fine,” he said, his voice level and reassuring. “We’ll get it taken care of.”
