The drive home felt interminable. Lisa’s hands were clammy on the steering wheel. She thought about the romantic dinners, the expensive gifts, the elaborate stories that had painted the picture of Sarah’s career as a “fashion designer.” Lisa now knew Sarah was a seamstress at a department store.

She should have listened more closely, asked more questions. A tightness formed in her chest. She had trusted Sarah, and now that trust felt irrevocably broken. The knowledge of her deception soured the memories.

She pulled into her driveway, the house looming large, and felt a profound sense of sadness.
