He sat on the park bench, the cold seeping through his jeans. He watched families laughing, couples holding hands. He felt utterly disconnected, isolated. He’d just found out that Emily, the "professor of history" he’d been dating, was actually a librarian. The revelation hung over him like a storm cloud.

He had fantasized about a life together, the stimulating conversations, the intellectual debates. Now, the future seemed bleak. He had been so dazzled by the illusion that he hadn't noticed the cracks. He should have observed more closely.
