He walked the dog in the park, the crisp air doing little to clear the fog in his brain. The dog, oblivious to his master's distress, tugged happily at the leash. He kept replaying the scene in his mind: the hushed tones, the secretive glances, the way she'd quickly ended the call when he walked in the room. He felt a profound sense of failure, a feeling that clawed at his insides. The vibrant colours of the fall leaves seemed suddenly dull, lacking their usual lustre. He had failed to see, to listen, to understand.
