The silence in the new office was deafening. John sat alone at his desk, staring at the blank computer screen. He should have been excited. A promotion, a bigger salary – it was what he'd always wanted. But the feeling of accomplishment he had enjoyed as a truck driver felt replaced by an unsettling emptiness.

He missed the open road, the freedom, and the radio chatter. He missed the simple satisfaction of a completed delivery. He replayed the conversations, the jokes, the shared experiences with his colleagues. He should have stayed. He realized it then, with a sharp pang in his chest.
