“It’s not real,” Emily kept repeating to herself, her voice a monotone drone. She was sitting on the floor in the middle of her bedroom, the test results crumpled in her hand. The wallpaper, that she had spent hours choosing with her mother, felt suffocating.

She remembered all the family holidays, the shared traditions, the small, seemingly insignificant moments that had built the framework of her life. Now, those memories felt like sand slipping through her fingers. She crawled into bed, pulling the covers over her head, wishing she could simply disappear.
