John sat at the kitchen table, the early morning sun casting long shadows across the room. The scent of coffee, usually so comforting, now seemed to sicken him. He’d always felt a deep connection to his brothers, a bond forged through shared experiences. Now, that connection felt fragile, threadbare. He couldn't meet their eyes.

He pushed his untouched plate of scrambled eggs away. He knew he should call his parents, tell them about the test. The thought created a knot in his stomach. He pictured the conversation, the questions, the inevitable unraveling of his life. He stared out the window, the world outside feeling a million miles away.
