"Are you sure you want to do this, Coach?" The assistant coach, a young man, had questioned him quietly beforehand. Coach Evans nodded, his throat tight. He sat at his kitchen table, late, staring at the phone. He'd been about to call Michael's mother to break the news. He hated doing this, especially to a kid who, despite his limitations, always showed up, always tried. The kitchen light seemed too bright, the silence too loud. He didn't want to make that phone call. He didn't want to do this at all.
