The aroma of burnt lasagna filled the air. Sarah sighed, staring at the charred dish she'd been so eager to make. Her kitchen was a mess. She had planned a simple gathering, a cozy meal with her closest friends. Instead, they were at Michael’s, celebrating the summer with a huge pool party.

She slumped onto a chair, feeling the weight of the day settle on her shoulders. She should have just gone. It's what everyone wanted.

Her phone buzzed. A photo of her friends laughing by the pool. A pang hit her deep down. She looked at the ruined dinner, then out the window at the empty street. She'd be eating alone. Again.
