“No way,” she mumbled, rereading the email. It felt like a betrayal. She hadn’t realized how much she relied on his presence, his easy laugh, his guidance.

She paced her small apartment, the worn rug soft beneath her feet. She'd been too busy complaining about the long hours, the demanding expectations. She should have been more grateful.

She thought of the times she had brushed him off, when he'd asked about her personal life. She should have shown more interest. She found herself wishing she could turn back time.
