"What a catastrophe," Evelyn muttered under her breath, watching the insurance adjusters arrive. The massive oak had crashed into her neighbor's greenhouse. She'd always been afraid of this. She knew the tree was old, and the wind had been picking up. She had thought about speaking to Mr. Abernathy, but she hadn't.

She'd worried about upsetting him. He was a difficult man. So, she'd kept quiet. She had hoped, with all her heart, that the tree would just stay put.

She crossed her arms, rubbing her shoulders against the chill in the air. She couldn’t seem to warm up. The thought kept circling in her mind, like a hawk over its prey: she could have done something. She should have done something.
