Rain lashed against the windows, mimicking the storm inside Amelia. Twenty years. Twenty years since she’d humiliated him, spreading rumors about his art project, fueled by her own insecurities. Now, a crisp, white envelope lay on her mahogany desk. The handwriting – shaky, yet familiar – was his. Her breath hitched.

She picked it up, the paper cool against her trembling fingers. Unfolding it, she saw a simple, plain apology. The words, however, were anything but. They were a torrent, a confession of the damage she’d caused, the trust she’d broken. A wave of heat washed over her face, and her vision blurred. She felt a profound ache settle in her chest, heavy and suffocating.

She finally pushed herself out of the chair, her movements slow and deliberate, and she walked to the mirror. The woman staring back was a stranger, etched with lines of worry, a ghost of her younger self. She looked away, turning to the window. The rain seemed to be coming down even harder now.
