The auctioneer cleared his throat. “And now, for the final item…” My brother, Liam, had inherited their father's classic car collection. I, it turned out, was left with a locked storage unit. I'd assumed I'd be given their father's antique furniture to furnish my new house, but there was no mention of any furniture in the will.

I watched the auctioneer approach the unit. He unlocked it with a flourish. Inside, were boxes of old photographs, letters, and mementos. I felt my face grow hot. Liam called and asked to have the boxes, and I just said "Sure." He was the one who cared about the past, after all.
