The pictures on the screen were vibrant, cheerful, a life he didn’t recognize. The house on Cedar Lane had been listed only a week before. Now, it was under offer. He’d promised himself he’d visit one day, take his own kids back.

He felt a deep sense of wrongness. The world seemed to tilt on its axis. He opened a bottle of scotch and poured himself a large glass, his hand shaking so violently he spilled some on the floor.

He was alone, with the knowledge of what he had squandered. He was alone with the echoes of what once was. He wanted to claw at his chest, to rip out the source of the pain.
