“Sold.” The word blazed in red across the screen. Chloe felt a wave of dizziness wash over her. It had taken her months to even look at the listing for her childhood house, but now it was too late. The place was gone. The house on Birch Avenue was gone.

She started pacing, her mind a whirlwind of fragmented memories. Her mother’s laughter. The smell of baking bread. The sound of rain on the roof. They were all gone.
