The laptop hummed, its screen reflecting Sarah's stricken face. David’s manuscript, "The Serpent in the Garden," lay open. He’d dedicated the whole damned thing to *her*. Every detail, from the way she chewed her lip when stressed to the exact shade of blue of her favorite sweater, was meticulously documented. A knot tightened in her stomach. She’d been so dismissive lately, so quick to anger.

The coffee cup she’d abandoned on the desk seemed to mock her, cold and untouched. She should have listened, should have tried harder. The words on the screen blurred, the characters too familiar, too real. She slammed the laptop shut, the sound echoing in the silent apartment.
