She found herself at the window, staring out at the courtyard. The old oak tree, its leaves already starting to turn, usually brought her a sense of calm. Today, the sight made her swallow hard.

A chill ran up her spine. The old building, with its mismatched windows and peeling paint, had always felt… safe. Familiar. Now, she felt a frantic need to replay every conversation she’d ever had with her landlord, every ignored maintenance request.

Her fingers traced the outline of a faded watercolor painting of the building, a gift from a former resident. It felt heavier, somehow, as if it weighed on her heart. The thought of all the memories, the shared laughter, the whispered secrets within these walls... it felt like a betrayal to abandon them.
