The realtor’s voice, chirpy and insincere, grated on his ears. “Think of the equity, the investment opportunity!” He just nodded, staring at the chipped paint around the window frame. He should have stayed home.

He felt a sudden, sharp pang in his stomach. He’d known, of course, that this day might come. He’d just… not prepared. Not emotionally, not financially.

The sun, casting long shadows across the empty living room, felt cold against his skin. He couldn’t shake the image of his neighbor, Mrs. Gable, and her small, overflowing garden. She'd be devastated. He *was* devastated.
