The cater waiters circulated with trays of hors d'oeuvres, and the clinking of glasses filled the air. Clara felt a strange lightness as she surveyed the scene, the air buzzing with anticipation. She’d been feeling… muted… for so long, and now she felt a strange electric spark. It was almost as though a switch had been flipped.

Then she saw him. He was talking to some friends near the bar, and her stomach did a strange, fluttery flip. She took a steadying breath.

She walked towards him, her head held high. “Well, well,” she said, her voice smooth. “Didn’t expect to see you here, Michael.”
