He had been weary, bone-tired from the endless churn of life. The new house, a rambling Victorian, was supposed to be a refuge. The previous owner had been a recluse, and the house had a reputation for being haunted. John scoffed at the tales.

One rainy afternoon, exploring the library, he felt a draught. The fireplace, intricately carved, seemed to be the source. Pushing against the stone, he heard a click. A hidden door in the hearth swung inward, revealing a small, windowless room.

Inside, a single, ornate desk sat under the weak glow of a dusty chandelier. He sat down, the worn leather of the chair molding to his shape. He picked up a pen and started to write. The words flowed effortlessly, a feeling of lightness blossoming within him. The rain outside seemed less ominous, the darkness less daunting.
