Eliza threw open her window, letting the city's sounds rush in. The air felt crisp, alive. She stretched, her back cracking in a satisfying way, and a smile crept across her face. Everything felt vivid, sharp. She had a bounce in her step as she went to meet Mark for dinner. She felt like she could leap over buildings. She’d been feeling this way since their date last night, after which they’d agreed to call it quits with their significant others. Mark was already at the restaurant, his eyes alight with something that mirrored her own excitement. “Wow,” he said, leaning in to kiss her. “You look… incredible.” She laughed, that pure, unburdened sound that had been missing from her life for so long. During dinner, he mentioned his ex, a woman named Emily, and how things hadn't worked out. Eliza then had the same, sinking feeling she’d had a few weeks before, when Emily had told her about a date she had the previous week with a guy named Mark.
