The clatter of dishes in the sink didn't bother Maria today. She was full of a different kind of energy. Her uncle was asking to sell her grandmother's engagement ring. She had felt her heart constrict, but today, she didn't feel the need to hide, didn't feel the weight of dread. She felt alive.

She dried her hands, grabbed her coat, and walked to the phone. She had to talk to her uncle. She would not let this go easily. She knew the ring’s significance.
