He ran his hand along the chipped paint of the porch railing, his fingers tracing the familiar imperfections. The demolition date loomed, a concrete deadline for his past. However, a strange energy vibrated within him. He felt an urge to scale the oak tree in the front yard, the same one he’d climbed a thousand times as a kid.

He found himself laughing, a deep, rumbling sound that surprised him. He began sorting through the rubble of the attic, pulling out forgotten toys and dusty photographs. He held the worn teddy bear he had loved as a child, and, for a moment, he felt a weight lifted off him. He noticed the tightness in his shoulders was gone, replaced by an openness he had not felt in years.
