The spotlight hit Maya's face, making her squint. It was a sea of familiar faces in the banquet hall, all there to celebrate her mother, Eleanor. A thrill buzzed through her. Clearing her throat, Maya began. Her voice rang out, clear and strong, without a tremor. “Mom, you’ve always been our lighthouse… guiding us through storms, showing us the way…” She surprised herself with the emotional quality in her tone, the feeling of something bubbling up from deep within.
